Winemaker’s Comments
The Mendocino County appellation is part of the large North Coast AVA that spreads northward from San Francisco Bay. Due to its remote location, the county’s reputation as a grape and wine-producing region was slow to develop. Traditionally, Mendocino wines were consumed locally. More recently, however, modern worldwide distribution has brought international attention. Long famous for its redwood forests, today Mendocino County is the world leader in certified organically grown grapes. There are over 15,000 acres of vineyards in the County, with 25% of them growing certified organic grapes. Mendocino hosts several smaller AVAs, including Anderson Valley, Redwood Valley, Potter Valley, Yorkville Highlands, and Mendocino Ridge.
Aromas of dried cranberries, pine nuts, cassis and vanilla warm your palate for flavors of jammy cranberry, white pepper and tart red apples. The lingering finish of cassis, candied cranberries and a light butterscotch vanilla brings a sparkle to your eye. Pair with a pesto-based pizza with mozzarella, pepperoni and Italian sausage.
Zinfandel
Zinfandel was for many years somewhat of a mystery grape, as far as its origins are concerned. Recent research in Croatia and at the University of California at Davis, using DNA profiling, has proved Zinfandel is a clone of the Croatian variety Crljenak. Nearly as versatile as Chardonnay in the number of different styles of wine produced from it, it has only achieved widespread popularity in America since 1980, as a pink, slightly sweet wine. “White Zinfandel” was credited with saving the “Old Vine” Zinfandel vineyards throughout California.
